New year, new trends!
We know we talk about hair trends a lot, but between seasonal changes, new techniques and inspiration from the world arounds us, there are always new hair trends emerging and catching on like wildfire.
With 2015 behind us we thought it would be fun to give you an insider’s look at what we think will be big in 2016 based on what our customers have been asking for and what we’re observing in the professional scene.
Take a look and you just might be inspired to make a big change for the year ahead:
1.) Balayage Will Continue to Dominate
You might read an article here or there that suggest balayage/ombre is phasing out, but it’s all a bunch of talk. Here at Bang Salon D.C. we continually get requests for various types of balayage from bold to subtle and everywhere in between. And this look is certainly not phasing out on the red carpets.
If you’ve been wanting to try out the balayage style for yourself, we suggest starting off easy like the above balayage picture done by Amanda at Bang Salon D.C. U Street. Or, if you’re really ready to make the plunge, we love a dramatic balayage like the below picture by Elsa at Bang Salon D.C.
2.) Rise of the Bold Hair Colors
With D.C. being such a suit- and pencil skirt-clad city, we think you would be surprised by how many people request vibrant hair color. And that’s in D.C., so just imagine how much color is on the rise in other parts of the country where mermaid, unicorn and pastel hair is more commonly accepted.
We see jewel tones like emerald, deep blue and magenta being really big this year, with silver (or #grannyhair) becoming a little less popular than it was in 2015, and pastels making a big splash of popularity in the summertime.

P.S. – For the folks who work on the Hill, you can still get your crazy fashion color fix with Redken Color Rebel Sticks so you can be a rebel on the weekends and back to professional on Monday.
3.) Natural Vibes All the Way
Finally we’re starting to see people embrace their natural texture! Don’t fight it, vibe with it!
Now don’t take natural to mean messy, the natural vibes trend emphasizes loose styling to achieve a polished look without being too stiff. Over the past couple years we’ve seen a lot of the messy, “effortless” styles take center stage, but the natural vibes trend errs more on the side of making the style easy by loosely styling your hair in it’s natural state whether that be wavy, straight or curly.
One haircut that allows for tons of versatility with this trend is the medium-length shag that’s either blunt or slightly layered depending on your hair type. A perfect example of this look is by Jasmine at Bang Salon D.C. U Street.
4.) Face Contouring with Hair
That’s right, you can contour your face without breaking out the bronzer, highlighter, concealer and two different kinds of foundation. (That’s exhausting just to type, we know it’s exhausting to do to your face everyday.)
Anyways, in 2016 we’re anticipating more cuts and highlights with the purpose of framing specific parts of the face to draw attention to and make certain features pop such as the jawline, cheekbones, or eyes.
Think blunt, collarbone-grazing bobs like the one Taraji P. Henson is rocking and shifts in color that even out the dimensions of your face, for example, the way Reese Witherspoon’s hair moves from darker at the root to gradually lighter around the midway point to widen out a narrow chin.
5.) Getting Away from the Same Old, Same Old
Last but not least, the trend we really see taking off this year isn’t one you’ll find in a fashion magazine or on a red carpet, it’s simply a trend we see more and more of our customers getting in to when they come in to the salon, and that’s switching things up.
We’re not talking drastic measure here, we’re talking more about the day to day. As more people embrace the notion that you don’t need to wash your hair everyday, use heat styling tools everyday and they’re looking to break out of the same old, same old style, we predict more people going for versatile cuts that they can leave down and natural one day, style the next, and do a fun or classy updo another day.
If you’re someone who’s been wanting to make a change in the new year, schedule an appointment to get a fresh new cut and a good dose of color, then get experimenting.
Hair is your number one accessory that you always have with you, no need to keep it looking the same 24/7!
