Amie’s natural eye and love for color is why she’s great at creating soft blondes and vibrant reds, and her modern twists on classic cuts keep her clients feeling fresh and up-to-date with the latest trends. In this Stylist Q&A, Amie gives us her top tips for healthy hair and for leaving the salon with a style you love:

Q: How long have you been styling hair and how did you get in to this profession?

A: I have been licensed for 10 years, but I’ve been working in a salon for 13 years. I started early by working in a salon in 10th grade.

I knew I would be in this profession since I was a kid, there was never any question that this is what I would do.

Q: How many years have you been with Bang Salon DC?

A: I’ve been with Bang for 7 years. I started at the Verizon Center location and then moved over to The Yards when we opened.

Q: What do you think makes Bang Salon a unique place to go get your hair done? There’s so many offerings here in the city, but why should someone try Bang?

A: I think it’s cool how there’s a Bang Salon location to fit everyone’s style. For example, Bang Salon at the Verizon Center is right in the hub of a professional area, so it’s a great place for workers to come get a cut on their lunch break or right as they’re getting out of the office on their way to the metro home without being hung up in a salon too long. They want to get it checked off their list and it’s a great place for that lifestyle.

Now being at The Yards I notice this is a more residential area and a place where people like to come for lunch, drinks and to be entertained. The vibe here is more relaxed and people don’t mind spending a little more time getting pampered. Having that diversity in atmosphere just between the different Bang locations is great because there’s truly a fit for everyone.

Q: What’s your favorite color trend happening right now?

A: I’ll always love soft, organic color that’s still dimensional and vibrant. Crazy colors can be fun, but natural, sun-kissed color is always pretty. And it’s also great for people with hectic schedules or are on a budget and don’t want a style that’s going to require a lot of upkeep or maintenance.

Q: What’s your current favorite cut or style? Something you just have a lot of fun doing?

A: It really varies from person to person. I always love doing a cut or style on someone that I know is going to look great for them, so that would be my favorite. Overall, a bob is always a classic and is a good cut because there’s so many variations such as an angled bob, stacked bob, or one-length. I like the versatility there.

Q: What is your number one hair tip you could give to someone who just overall wants healthier hair?

A: People really over-wash their hair, so I would just say, wash your hair less. Try to go 2 to 3 days between washes and switch up your style to avoid looking greasy. Wear your hair down the first day, then do a half-up, half-down style the next (I’m loving the half-up, half-down top knot style right now) and then to an up-do the third day.

If you workout and your hair gets sweaty just blow dry it in and use some dry shampoo. Sweat is just salt, so use it to your advantage by creating a messy, beachy style.

When you let your hair go a few days between washes you’re allowing the oils to travel the length of your hair, which is good for hair health, plus it’s better for color-treated hair and for holding a style. Not washing your hair everyday is just better all the way around.

Q: What’s something clients can do to ensure they’ll be happy with the results of their appointment?

A: People always think, “I know you probably hate it when people show you pictures…,” but that’s not true at all! If you’re wanting a specific look, pictures are the best way to translate what you’re wanting to your stylist because you see things differently than I do. If you say, “I want red hair,” you’ll have a picture in your mind of what that looks like, and my technical eye may see it totally differently than you do. By bringing in a picture it will allow us to both be on the same page.

Also, I always tell my client if I don’t think the style they want will look good on them, but if you have any question about it, just give your stylist the permission to tell you what they really think. Say “I’m not sure how I would look with this, but I like it. What are your thoughts? Do you think this will look good on me?” Asking those questions will definitely help when it comes to leaving your appointment with a style you love.

Q: Who’s your favorite celebrity “hair crush” right now?

A: I don’t really crush on celebrities, I crush and get inspired by the work my peers and other stylists in the industry put out there. There are so many amazing stylists that I’m influenced by and inspire me on a daily basis and I like to pull my creative inspiration from them!
