Bang Salon Superstar: Sarah Mattis

This month, we’re introducing you to Sarah Mattis, a record-loving, risk-taking stylist at our Gallery Place salon. She’s all about helping clients achieve those bold new looks, and she knows how to get you there. Read on to learn more about when she knew she wanted to be a hairstylist and what she loves most about working at Bang.
Describe your journey of becoming a hairstylist. When did you know that you wanted to pursue this career?
I didn’t know I wanted to be a hairstylist until I was in my twenties. But I had my first client, Barbie, when I was eight years old. I would use my markers to color her hair and do her makeup. I even used my socks to make new clothes. My mom was mad then, but now she gets it. Later, I moved on to my friends and family — I got in trouble a few times for coloring my hair with Kool-Aid. Eventually I was introduced to a hairstylist who became a good friend and mentor. I worked with him on photoshoots, and after that I knew I wanted to be a hairstylist. So I graduated from Paul Mitchell Schools and made it happen!
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy doing hair because I love seeing the client’s reaction when they finally get the color or cut they’ve been dreaming of. I don’t feel like I’m working. I love what I do! And I love Bang because they have a solid foundation, and I feel like I can grow here. Plus I really enjoy all of my clients and spending time with them — especially when they bring me coffee.
How would you describe your own personal sense of style?
I’m very adventurous! But at the same time, it has to make sense. Sometimes you have to build the house before you can decorate it. Some things are not achievable in the first appointment alone.
What would you say to someone who’s on the fence about trying a new cut or color?
Baby steps. It really depends on the person and situation. I always like to walk the person through the appointment so they understand what I’m doing and why it’s important. Also it’s important to be truthful so they know what to expect at the end of the appointment. I understand it can be stressful for someone when they’re trying a new style or stylist. I do prefer for people to tell me when they don’t like something because it makes my job easier.
Outside of the salon, how do you spend your time?
I love music. If I were more outgoing, I would totally be a lead singer. I have medium-size record collection, and I’m thinking about moonlighting as a DJ. I just need one more turntable!
