Stylist Q & A with Amanda Adams of Bang Salon U StreetStylist Q & A with Amanda Adams of Bang Salon U Street
Q: How long have you been styling hair and how did you get in to this profession?
A: I graduated cosmetology school in 2006 from West Valley Occupational Center in Los Angeles.
I knew I wanted to become a hairstylist from a really young age. Actually, my friends would let me experiment with hair color and cuts, which was always fun for me, but maybe not always fun for them! Either way, it encouraged me to go to beauty school and pursue that passion as my career.
Q: How many of those years have you been with Bang?
A: I have been with Bang Salon on U Street since August of 2012.
Q: What do you think makes Bang Salon a unique place to go get your hair done? There’s so many offerings here in the city, but why should someone try Bang?
A: Bang Salon is unlike any salon I’ve worked at. We only offer hair services (no nails, no waxing, etc.), which is a guarantee that you’ll be leaving here looking your best, and knowing how to recreate the look because we’re solely focused on your hair. We are also constantly learning through continued education courses that always ahead of new trends and methods in hairstyling.
Q: What’s your favorite hairstyle or color trend happening right now?
A: My favorite color trend still has to be ombré. It’s definitely not getting old or going anywhere any time soon! I also love to freshen up my clients by adding brighter colors that fade to a pastel. Pastels are another unique color choice that you will see everywhere this summer.
Q: Alright, last question..what is your number one hair tip you could give to someone who wants to have healthy and soft hair?
A: If you’re a hot tools addict like I am, you need to be using a heat protector. It’s the only way to keep your hair long, soft and healthy. The number one question I am asked is: “How can I get longer hair faster?” If I see that a client is curling or flat ironing a few times a week using a heat protector will save your ends and encourage healthy, stronger ends.
For blow drying, I love Redken’s Pillow Proof Express Primer, and a little bit of dry shampoo for finishing. For flat ironing or curling I always have Redken Iron Shape 11 Finishing Thermal Spray on hand.

Making Your Style Last Longer with Dry Shampoo
Most women would love for their hair to be wash-and-go friendly while still looking fabulous, but the reality of hair is, we do have to put in a little effort if we want our hair to look good.
With that said, you also shouldn’t have to be a slave to your hair just for it to look nice.
First things first, your lifestyle and willingness to put time in to your hair will determine a good cut for you, along with a consultation with a wonderful stylist, of course.
However, the second part of that equation is knowing how to stretch out your style so you’re spending less time styling your fabulous hair and more time flaunting it.
Enter dry shampoo. For ladies who love to take a lunch time fitness class or go every couple of days between washes to make your blowout last longer, dry shampoo is what you need in your style arsenal to keep your hair looking fresh and vibrant ’til your next shampoo.
There are a lot of dry shampoos on the market, but these are our favorites, and you can find at all Bang Salon locations.
If you’re suffering from seriously greasy roots and don’t have any time to wash and style your hair this will be your saving grace.
Pureology packs a heavy punch with degreasing, so if you’re hair isn’t too bad, but just needs a little freshening make sure to use sparingly. A little bit goes a long way with this one.
The other plus-side of this dry shampoo is even though you’ll be getting rid of second day hair oil, you won’t be losing the great texture of second day hair that you can use to your advantage for holding an up do or curl if you want to change up your look.
Redken Powder Refresh 01 Aerosol Hair Powder Dry Shampoo
Redken Powder Refresh 01 is perfect for hair that has some texture. While many dry shampoos require you to brush out your hair after use, we like to use this for curly girls who don’t want to brush through their curls for fear of making them frizzy.
By holding the nozzle a slight distance away and lifting up the roots of your hair with your fingers, you can get nice, even coverage that will add life back in to your style, while also diminishing any grease. This dry shampoo also has a light minty scent that feels refreshing on the scalp as well.
Surface Trinity Dry Shampoo
This is our go-to for gals that want clean products in addition to clean hair.
Surface prides themselves on creating products that use sustainably harvested ingredients and certified organic botanicals. Their products are also sulfate, gluten and paraben free.
Beyond their focus on products the support personal health, their dry shampoo has a fantastic fresh scent that’s mild (great for anyone with aversion to overly powdery scents) and it doesn’t leave behind any residue you might get with a low-quality dry shampoo.
Tips for application:
-Lift roots with fingers.
-Spray your dry shampoo roughly 6 to 10 inches away depending on the desired amount of dry shampoo you want to use.
-Spray your roots from a variety of angles and then you can brush out with a natural bristle brush or use your fingers to gently comb out your roots, but don’t finger comb too long or you’ll introduce more oil, which is what you’re trying to avoid.
-If you feel like you’ve used too much dry shampoo you can do a quick blast with a hair dryer, otherwise your style will look as voluminous as it did on day one.
